PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Prepare for a physically demanding tour. Age is not a concern so long as you are physically fit, a very good walker at an energetic pace, and able to stand for extended periods of time and climb lots of hills and stairs. All the above could be done in all sorts of weather and temperatures. You are required to load and unload your bags into the van, and to carry your bag to your room. This sometimes could be a short distance from the hotel. Most days our sightseeing will cover anywhere from 2-8 miles of walking, sometimes over uneven surfaces. Plan to get in shape before you head to Italy.
Note on Physical Activity
You must be in good physical condition to sign-up for this trip. This is not a "walking or hiking" tour, but there will be plenty of walking, some uphill and most on uneven cobblestones. You will need to be on your feet for extended periods of time. (Especially in museums and in Rome.) I am NOT exaggerating about this! There are many steps throughout the trip that you will have to climb. A hilltown really means a hilltown! You will also have to handle your own luggage most of the time. If for some reason you are unable to take part in all scheduled activities, you can usually stay at the hotel and relax. I will be glad to work with you on possible alternative activities if they are possible, but cannot guarantee it and you will not be compensated for this time on your own. Also, if you decide to take public transportation to or from a sight or restaurant that I usually walk to, it will be at your own expense. Please make sure that you do understand these requirements fully before you consider signing up for one of my tours. It is very unfair to others on the tour if we must miss planned visits because you did not take this seriously. I will plan time for you to relax, but have found that most people want to see as much as possible while in Italy. Most towns are made for walking and this is how we get around. Don't worry, I bring plenty of ibuprofen along.

Day 1 - Arrival Day - Benvenuto! - Welcome to Italy – Thursday, April 1, 2027
Welcome to Italy! Arrive at Rome's Leonardo Da Vinci airport by 11AM for pickup and transfer to Southern Italy for a visit to one of the most beautiful areas in Italy. (The earlier the better.) The Divine Coast south of Naples is truly memorable. Here mountains erupt from the Mediterranean and pastel-hued villages cling to their sides. This area is filled with dazzling antiquities like Pompeii and breathtaking natural wonders.
We will spend 3 days in this picturesque region with the town of Sorrento as our base. This lovely village is known for its many orange and lemon groves, which you will see everywhere. The perfume of the citrus trees is a reminder to sample the local liqueur, Limoncello. You will find panoramic sea views from many points in town that include the ever-present active volcano, Mount Vesuvius.
We will explore Sorrento and its narrow Roman-grid streets. We will then get acquainted with one of its most deep-rooted traditions, the cultivation of lemons. La Limonaia is a green and peaceful oasis in the middle of Sorrento. You will have a guided tour of its lush lemon grove to learn about the typical cultivation techniques. This will be followed by a “lemon heaven” dinner. Afterwards, there will be more time to explore the cobblestoned lanes of Sorrento filled with other traditional treasures like cameos, handmade sandals, and inlaid wood creations. (D) Moderate
Day 2 - Picturesque Villages and the Amazing Vista of “la Costa Amalfitana Divina” – Friday, April 2, 2027
Today will be a full day of discovery on a drive along the famous Amalfi Coast, the most amazing of all the Mediterranean shores. It has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site. You will visit the vertical town of Positano, where colorful houses cling to a hillside overlooking the sea. Continue to Amalfi, once a mighty maritime republic. Enjoy a walk through the town and a visit to the Duomo di Sant' Andrea which glitters when the sun strikes the gold mosaics on its pediment. Then continue your scenic ride up to the charming town of Ravello, with those never-ending views of the turquoise blue sea. We will dine together once again for dinner at my favorite restaurant in Sorrento. It is known as the “Donkey Restaurant”, you will understand why once you are there. (B) (D) Moderate
Day 3 - La Dolce Vita in Paradise – Saturday, April 3, 2027
You will have time today to enjoy more of this heavenly location just as you like. You can spend more time in Sorrento. You could take a train or bus to other areas along the coast. Take a cooking class. You could take a ferry to the magical Isle of Capri. Hire a private boat for fun in the Mediterranean. It is your day to spend as you like, enjoying "the good life”. (B)
Day 4 - Ancient Pompeii and the Umbrian Hill Town of Orvieto – Sunday, April 4, 2027
When Mount Vesuvius erupted in AD 79, the lively port city of Pompeii was perfectly preserved by the volcano's ashes. Pompeii has amazed visitors since its discovery in the 18th century. Exquisite mosaics and wall paintings among the ruins of theaters, shops, homes and temples offer total immersion into the ancient Roman world. We will visit the site with a local archeologist guide and enjoy a tour throughout the excavations.
Then we will head north to the region of Umbria and the town of Orvieto. It sits majestically atop an outcrop of volcanic tufa stone with thousands of caves underneath the city, dug out during Etruscan, Medieval and Renaissance times. Orvieto was once an important Etruscan city. Today it is famous for one of Italy's most beautiful Gothic cathedrals with a miracle behind its construction, and a delicious white wine, Orvieto Classico. Also, the Vistas from its 1000 ft. high perch of the surrounding rolling hills is astounding.
We will meet for our dinner at the Trattoria Tipica Etrusca, which specializes in Etruscan dishes and hides its own secret underground. (B) (D) Strenuous
Day 5 - Eat, Pray and Love This Day! - Monday, April 5, 2027
Orvieto is not a large village but has plenty of pretty, winding lanes filled with wonderful shops to explore. The region of Umbria is incredibly well-known for its rich culinary traditions. You will find salami and prosciutto from local producers that are considered among the best in Italy. Olive Oil, chocolate and a thick rustic pasta called pici are all delicious. Shops and trattorias are filled with these delights. We will visit inside the Orvieto Duomo, 300 years in construction, with its San Brizio Chapel covered in frescos by Luca Signorelli. You may wish to tour the fascinating Orvieto Underground to see thousands of years of archaeological history.
Since this area is famous for its wine, we must take some time for a tasting. We will travel into the nearby countryside to Decugnano dei Barbi for a wine tour and tasting. We will tour the winery, vineyards and caves, then toast with their top wines, including the Metodo Classico.
You will have the evening free to enjoy peaceful Orvieto. (B) (L) Light
Day 6 - Volterra, a Hidden Tuscan Treasure & the Stunning Vistas of the Italian Riviera –
Tuesday, April 6, 2027
This morning we will travel into the beloved region of Tuscany for a visit to Volterra, another ancient Etruscan city that is just beautiful. We will enjoy a walking tour to learn about its 3000-year-old history and its work in alabaster, a translucent stone found locally. Volterra occupies a stunning location surrounded by Vistas of heavenly landscapes.
Then we are off to the nearby region of Liguria and another famous area of Italy, the Italian Riviera. The seaside village of Sestri Levante will be our home for the next two nights. The Hotel Vis a'Vis enjoys a stunning, panoramic view of the blue-green Mediterranean. You will love the comfort and elegance of this hotel, but the mesmerizing Vista will be what makes you never want to leave. You will have access to a relaxing pool and fitness center with a Sauna and massage room. Sestri Levante is a typical European resort town, and you will find many shops and restaurants. You will enjoy strolling along the beach and exploring the town. You will have time to settle in before we meet on the hotel terrace to experience that magnificent view followed by a walk-through town and dinner. Later, do not miss the chance to enjoy a nightcap with those amazing views from the hotel terrace bar. Salute! (B) (D) Moderate
Day 7 - La Dolce Far Niente (The sweetness of doing nothing) – Wednesday, April 7, 2027
Today you will have the entire day for your own pursuits. You can stay in Sestri Levante and enjoy all the amenities of the Vis a' Vis hotel or visit one of the private beaches in town. You can take a boat ride to Portofino, the playground of the rich and famous. You could even visit Genoa, about an hour train ride away.
One of the most popular day trips in the region is the Cinque Terre, a string of five path-connected villages along the Mediterranean Sea. The tiny fishing villages cling to the seaside cliffs overlooking the breaking waters below. These villages are full of simple charm and natural beauty. Each has a personality of their own as well. You can visit all five villages by train, boat or by hiking the paths. The newly reopened path between the villages of Riomaggiore and Manarola is called the Via dell' Amore. Vernazza is known as the jewel of the Cinque Terre. Corniglia sits high on the cliff and has magnificent views. Monterosso al Mare has a wonderful beach that you can enjoy.
Also, do not forget that dining in Italy is one of life's great pleasures. It takes on a whole new meaning here along this part of the coast. Fishing has been the lifeblood of the area residents for centuries. You can count on enjoying a good seafood dinner every night in this area with seafood fresh off the boat. Pesto is also a local product and is used on many dishes. Focaccia bread is another local delicacy. There are even some good wines made here along the coast. All these products are available at little shops throughout the area. (B) Light to Strenuous, your choice.
Day 8 – Milano, a Delightful Mix of Rich History, World-Famous Art & High Fashion - Thursday, April 8, 2027
Take time this morning to enjoy one last look at that awesome Vista of the “mare” from your hotel in Sestri Levante. We will head north once again passing close to Genoa, hometown of Christopher Columbus. We will pass through Northwest Italy and the fertile plains of the Piedmont region where you will see miles of rice fields growing that famous arborio rice used for Risotto, a famous regional dish.
Our destination for today is Milan in the region of Lombardy. Milan is Italy’s economic powerhouse, a bustling city of finance and industry, media empires and fashion houses. Milan has an impressive cultural heritage, and its historic center has some of the most beautiful and varied buildings in all of Italy. We will start our “Magical History Tour” in Piazza Duomo with Europe’s third largest church as its centerpiece. We will visit inside and if time permits you can ride an elevator up to the rooftop terrace for a breathtaking Vista of Milan and its surroundings. You may even get a glimpse of the snow-covered Alps. This area is perfect for walking and browsing elegant shops with a stop for a Campari spritz and some major people-watching inside the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. This breathtaking glass-domed arcade is a symbol of Milan. We will explore the area and then sit down for a delicious dinner of regional specialties.
The Hotel Berna is located near the Milano-Centrale train station. There is easy access to the Milan Metro which is great for sightseeing in this large city. We will be here for three nights. (B) (D) Moderate
Day 9 - Lago Como and Bellagio, the Pearl of the Lake – Friday, April 9, 2027
This tour has focused on “Magical Vistas” and there is still one more to take in. Our day will start with an excursion to nearby Lake Como. Lake Como is a hazy, lazy lake lined with lovely villas and crowned with snowcapped mountains. It has been the home to the rich and famous and a major holiday destination for centuries. We will visit the town of Como, known for its silk production. We will then board a ferry for Bellagio, self-proclaimed "Pearl of the Lake". You will have plenty of time to immerse yourself in this beautiful setting. We will return to Milan for the evening and will enjoy dinner in the Naviglio Grande or Canal District. This atmospheric night spot is the perfect place for a final dinner together. (B) (D) Moderate
Day 10 - Milan Your Way – Saturday, April 10, 2027
Wow, it is hard to believe that this is the last day of your tour. Milan has so much to offer, so today will be your day to spend as you like. Many people feel that they cannot visit Milan without seeing Leonardo’s Last Supper. You can take a foodie tour. There are also several day trips from Milan that you may want to check out. The cities of Turin, Verona, and Lugano, Switzerland are a train ride away. Since timing for today will be uncertain, there will not be a set meal, but hopefully we will be able to meet for a farewell drink. (B)
Day 11 - Arrivederci Italia! – Sunday, April 11, 2027
It is time to say "arrivederci". You will need to arrange your transportation to the airport on your own. Parting will be such sweet sorrow, but I know you will take along wonderful memories of time spent enjoying all those magical "Italian Vistas" with new friends. (B)

Remember you will arrive in Europe the day after you depart the USA. You will need to book your air travel so that you arrive in Venice early enough on March 21st, to check into your hotel and be ready to meet with the group for sightseeing at 3 PM.
DAY 1 - ARRIVAL DAY – “BENVENUTO IN ITALIA” – SUNDAY, MARCH 21, 2027
Welcome to VENICE, known as "La Serenissima", the most serene. Many first-time visitors are often stirred deeply by this almost fantasy world unlike anything they have ever seen before. We will enjoy a walking tour through the back streets of Venice leading to the Grand Canal near the Rialto Bridge, continuing to St. Mark's Square. Napoleon referred to this square as “the most beautiful drawing room in Europe". St. Mark's Basilica and the Doge's Palace are both located here. We will enjoy a “Welcome Dinner” at a restaurant located along a quiet canal. We will toast to the start of our adventures through Italy with a Bellini, a drink that was invented at Harry's Bar in Venice.

DAY 2 - THE PLEASURE OF GETTING LOST IN VENICE – MONDAY, MARCH 22, 2027
We will dive right into the historic center of what was for centuries Europe's top superpower, with a visit inside St. Mark's Basilica and its museum. We will then cross the Rialto Bridge, which has been a major landmark in Venice since 1588. Across the Rialto Bridge is the commercial district of Venice. You will find the local vegetable and fish markets here in the same place they have been for centuries.
The rest of the day is free for you to visit Venice's other famous sights or get delightfully lost on this magical island. You must take a gondola ride sometime during your visit. Also, do not forget that Venice has some of the best and most unusual shopping in Italy. You may also wish to take a boat ride to one of the islands like Murano to see the glass blowing exhibits. DAY 3 – PISA AND LUCCA, TUSCAN TREASURES – TUESDAY, MARCH 23, 2027
Today we will move south to the beautiful region of Tuscany. Our first stop will be to visit one of Italy's most famous sights, the Leaning Tower of Pisa. PISA sits near the Mediterranean coast on the Arno River. The Field of Miracles complex includes the famous leaning bell tower, a stunning cathedral, and a very interesting cemetery. You will have time to enjoy everything.
Then we head to nearby LUCCA, Italy's most impressive fortress city, encircled by well-preserved Renaissance walls. Lucca boasts a beautiful historic center of cobblestoned streets lined with ornate churches, cute cafes, and pretty shops. There are many towers and one even with a tree on top. You can climb up to this one if you like. We will wander these streets for a bit on our way to enjoy our first Tuscan meal together accompanied by some famous Tuscan vino. Salute! (B) (D) Moderate
DAY 4 – SMILE! YOU ARE IN TUSCANY! – WEDNESDAY, MARCH 24, 2027
Lucca seems to be the new “must visit” town in Tuscany and you will have plenty of time to find out why. You will have the opportunity to learn all about Lucca on the “Delectable” tour. While walking through the historic center of Lucca to admire its artistic and historic monuments, you will also visit small, traditional shops that feature local food products. To tempt the eye and palate, there will be the aroma of freshly baked focaccia topped with the famous olive oil of Lucca, a piece of “Cecina”, a thin type of pizza made from locally grown chick-peas, along with other delicacies such as Buccellato (sweet raisin bread), cheeses and cold cuts from the Garfagnana area, all washed down by a glass of good Tuscan wine from the area. This will be a fun way to learn all about this delightful city.
After the tour you will have free time for your own exploration. You might like to ride a bicycle along the garden like walls surrounding the old town. You may want to relax with a before-or-after-dinner drink in Piazza Anfiteatro, a bustling square that was once a Roman amphitheater. (B) (L) Moderate
DAY 5 – VOLTERRA AND A VISIT TO THE FARM – THURSDAY, MARCH 25, 2027
Today will be an enjoyable day of learning and discovery. We will start with a visit to the grand hill town of VOLTERRA, the most important Etruscan town in central Tuscany. You will have a guided tour with an overall historical introduction to Volterra. A must in Volterra is a stop in an alabaster workshop, since the carving of this stone is one of the most typical expressions of the local craftsmen. You will also stare at Roman ruins, huge fortification walls and cute little lanes that give the town its charm and fascination.
Next, we will visit a very panoramic organic Cheese Farm in the middle of the countryside. You will learn about the intricate process of crafting cheese in Tuscany and discover the origins of “pecorino,” a sheep’s milk cheese derived from the Italian word “pecora,” meaning sheep. You will get to visit the barn and meet the animals. You can tour the cheese factory, learn about each step of the process, and witness some of the aging phases. This will be followed by a nice lunch that will include the homemade cheese products and other local dishes prepared by family members.
We will then head to SAN GIMIGNANO, one of the most beautiful villages in Tuscany. San Gimignano is known as the “city of towers”. This is one of the most popular hill towns in Tuscany, and one of my favorites as well. You will truly enjoy exploring this quintessential medieval town. I always encourage everyone to rise early, to see the village before it comes alive with locals and tourists. It is like a fairytale setting. After settling into our hotel, we will meet for a short orientation walking tour of the village. (B) (L) Moderate
DAY 6 - MAGICAL SAN GIMIGNANO – FRIDAY, MARCH 26, 2027
You have been going strong for several days, so today you will have time to relax and "breathe in the warmth of Tuscany". You will have the day to discover San Gimignano as you like. This is always a favorite stop in Tuscany, and you will find lots to enjoy. You may wish to visit inside their Duomo. There are beautiful frescos throughout the church that were used to teach the peasants who could not read the stories of the Bible. There is also a small chapel dedicated to Santa Fina, the patron Saint of San Gimignano, frescoed in 1475 by Ghirlandaio, one of Michelangelo’s teachers. You might also wish to climb the Torre Grande for the best views around. How about a visit to the Museum of Torture?
You may just enjoy shopping along the main streets. This has always been an important trading center. It was on the famous Via Francigena: the most traveled of the medieval roads that pilgrims traveled to Rome. From the 8th century, it was the route through France that linked Canterbury Cathedral in England and Rome, the heart of Christianity. Today you will find locally owned shops selling ceramics, soaps, leather goods, etc. You will also find a great selection of paintings and prints of the Tuscan area. There are all sorts of enticements in San Gimignano.
Also, do not miss the award-winning gelato at Gelateria Dondoli located right across from our hotel for a little taste of gelato heaven. Throngs of tourists come in and out of San Gimignano each day and it is especially nice to be able to enjoy it after the crowds have gone. (B) Light to Strenuous?
DAY 7 – SIENA, A TUSCAN TREASURE – SATURDAY, MARCH 27, 2027
Today we start early with a visit to Siena. This beloved Tuscan hill town’s medieval character has survived to an amazing extent. Siena's heart is the shell shaped Piazza del Campo, one of Italy's most famous and most beautiful squares. The Palio, a renowned horse race dating back to the 17th century, still takes place twice a year right here.
There will be time to enjoy a tour of some of Siena's most important sights. First stop will be the massive Duomo, one of the most ornate in Italy. The inside of the Duomo is as ornate as the outside with its famous marble floors and sculptures by Michelangelo, Pisano and Bernini. The Piccolomini Library has some stunning frescos that depict the life of Pope Pius II. The frescos are just as vibrant as the day they were finished over 550 years ago.
After enjoying all that Siena has to offer, we will visit Tenuta Torciano for a guided tour of its beautiful winery and vineyards. This will be followed by a delicious meal that includes a Wine and Olive Oil Tasting. You will taste a variety of oils along with some Tenuta Torciano wine including the delicious local white wine called Vernaccia. This is one of the few white wines produced in Tuscany. It is a fruity white that was said to be a favorite of Michelangelo.

DAY 8 - FLORENCE, BIRTHPLACE OF THE RENAISSANCE – EASTER SUNDAY, MARCH 28, 2027
Buona Pasqua! Easter Sunday in Tuscany, what more could you ask for! Take time this morning to enjoy spending this special day in one of the most amazing cities in the world. Pasqua is a special time in Italy, and you will enjoy seeing the beautiful Easter displays in windows throughout the city. Later, we will jump right into the ‘frenzy’ of Firenze with a walking tour of the main sights including the Duomo and the Baptistery, with its famous bronze doors, “the Gates of Paradise”. Florence is known as an outdoor museum, and you will have time to enjoy all the sculpture, art, and architecture that surrounds you.
Seeing Michelangelo’s sculpture of his 17 Ft. marble “David” is truly a highlight of any visit to Florence. We will visit the Accademia Gallery to gaze upon one of the most famous sculptures in the world. We will enjoy an Easter dinner together at Il Latini where you can taste the famous Bistecca alla Fiorentino. (B) (D) Moderate
DAY 9 – THE ETERNAL CITY OF ROME – EASTER MONDAY, MARCH 29, 2027
We will say our farewell to Florence from the spectacular viewing area located on Piazzale Michelangelo. We will then make a stop at the American Military Cemetery located just outside of Florence. The compelling sight of endless rows of white marble crosses recalls the heroism of the young Americans who fought so valiantly to free Italy from the grips of fascism during World War II. The 1940's may seem like a very long time ago, but during WWII this area was terribly ravaged by the fighting. I feel it is an honor and our duty to take time to pay our respects to these brave soldiers.
Then we are off to ROME, the capital of Italy. There will be time for a walking tour of Rome's historical district. We will visit Largo Argentina, Piazza Venezia and the Trevi Fountain along the way. The Pantheon is the only building in Rome to have been continually in use since its construction in 120AD. We will visit inside and marvel at this amazing structure. We will enjoy dinner together at Tre Scalini located in Piazza Navona. If you love chocolate, then you must try their famous “Tartufo” dessert. Rome is known for so many delicious pasta dishes including Cacio e pepe, Bucatini all’ amatriciana and Spaghetti alla carbonara. Molto delizioso!! (B) (D) Strenuous
DAY 10- THE TREASURES OF VATICAN CITY– TUESDAY, MARCH 30, 2027
Today we will visit Campo de Fiore with its lively market. Then we will cross the Tiber River on the Ponte Sant' Angelo with its beautiful statues of Angels by Bernini. This bridge leads to the Castel Sant'Angelo, built as a tomb for the Emperor Hadrian in 139AD.
From here we will enter Vatican City, a tiny independent country. We will take some time for lunch together at a little outdoor cafe. You will then spend a big part of the day visiting the Vatican Museum with its famous Sistine Chapel followed by a visit inside St. Peter's Basilica, the largest and grandest church in Christendom. DAY 11 - THE WONDERS OF ANCIENT ROME – WEDNESDAY, MARCH 31, 2027
Today will be a full day of sightseeing starting with a walking tour of Ancient Rome's most important sights. There will be time to learn of the origins of Rome as we visit the Campidoglio which sits on the Capitoline Hill.
The Colosseum is one of the most impressive sights in the entire city of Rome. We will visit inside and learn about 'Bread and Circuses' and the Gladiatorial games. We will then walk among the ruins of the Roman Forum, the political and religious center of ancient Rome. Afterwards, you will have some free time to continue your ancient history lesson with a visit to Palatine Hill or other spots in Rome. We will meet later for our “farewell dinner”. Prepare for a physically demanding tour. Age is not a concern so long as you are physically fit, a very good walker at an energetic pace, and able to stand for extended periods of time and climb lots of hills and stairs. Day 1– Bienvenue! Welcome to France – Sunday, April 11, 2027
Welcome to Southern France and Aix-en-Provence, the City of Fountains. Aix (pronounced X) is one of the most elegant and wonderfully preserved of all French cities. Founded by the Romans in 122 BC, its quaint streets, colorful markets, and beautiful landscapes have lured artists, writers, nobles and visitors just like you for centuries. The main avenue, Cours Mirabeau, is considered one of the most beautiful in Europe. You really do feel like you are in a small version of Paris. We will learn about its vibrant history, as well as its connection to 20th century artists like Cezanne. Today it is also home to over 40,000 students who attend its renowned university. Our home for the next two nights is the Grand Hotel Roi Rene, a lovely 4-star hotel situated in the middle of everything. We will meet for a welcome drink and orientation followed by a short walk into town where we will sit down for dinner in this historic, one-time capital of Provence. (D) Light
Day 2 – Aix-en-Provence – Elegant and Easy to Love – Monday, April 12, 2027
Today, you will have time to recover from your long journey to France along with plenty of time to enjoy this beautiful city. The hotel has a wonderful pool for relaxing. You may wish to wander its lovely streets and explore its varied shops. The Aix tourist office offers several great tours. You might want to follow in the footsteps of Paul Cezanne, a hometown legend. There are day trips to local wineries or to the lovely seaside village of Cassis. (B) Light
Day 3 – “French Foodie Heaven” & St. Rémy-de-Provence – Tuesday, April 13, 2027
We will start the day out early with a walking tour of Aix with a focus on “food”. This city of art and culture is a real paradise of amazing selections of Provençal food and wine. You will enjoy “The Provence Food Tour” to taste Aix’s finest delicacies and learn about its history and secrets. A highlight of the tour is the Aix-en-Provence farmers market, one of the oldest in France, dating back over seven centuries! You will be guided through the winding streets of old town, into the farmers’ markets and food shops while meeting some of the passionate vendors and rubbing shoulders with locals doing their daily shopping in market. We'll taste seasonal fruits and vegetables and other specialties, both sweet and savory. Fresh pastries, cheese, olives, charcuterie and even a little wine will be among the menu of about a dozen different tastings.
After our “foodie” adventure will we say farewell to Aix. We will then wind our way to small, but sophisticated, Saint Rémy-de-Provence, our home base for the next 5 nights. St. Rémy is undoubtedly one of the most delightful towns in all of Provence. Encircled by a boulevard of plane trees, the center of town is filled with fine old buildings, pretty squares, plant filled alleyways, and cooling fountains. This small village was the birthplace to Nostradamus and a setting for many of Van Gogh's works of art. There was also once a thriving Roman city near St. Rémy called Glanum. The Hotel du Soleil has the feeling of being a simple, country inn, but is an easy walk into town. Unlike many IWF’s tours, you will stay in one spot for most of our time in Provence. After some time for exploration passing chic boutiques, cute culinary shops and numerous restaurants, we will enjoy dinner together. (B) (L) (D) Moderate
Day 4 - Treasures of Provence & Historic Pont du Gard – Wednesday, April 14, 2027
This region is famous for some of the most beautiful and lively weekly village markets in France and St. Rémy has one of the best. You can find a wide array of items from food to clothing to household goods. It can be a lot of fun to get there very early in the morning and watch them set up. Many of the vendors display their goods like works of art. You will have the morning to enjoy this little slice of Provençal life and perhaps find a few treasures of your own.
After lunch we will take a drive through the countryside crossing the Rhone River at Tarascon with its grandiose Chateau du Roi Rene sitting high on its banks. This sleepy village is picture-perfect, and it has a twin across the river. Beaucaire is another lovely riverside village and has a castle of its own.
Today’s highlight is a visit to one of this area's most important historical sights, Pont du Gard, built by the Romans in 19 BC as part of a 30-mile canal to supply water to the nearby town of Nîmes is a remarkable sight. This enormous 3-tiered aqueduct rises as much as 160 feet above the Gardon valley and was in use through the ninth century. It was the tallest bridge the Romans ever built. Today it is a UNESCO World Heritage site. We will take time to explore the area, take a walk across the bridge and visit the interesting museum. Once back in St. Rémy, we will enjoy a “picnic” dinner. (B) (D) Moderate
Day 5 - Hill Towns of Le Luberon – Thursday, April 15, 2027
This morning we will start out early for our excursion into the Luberon Valley, a picturesque region of mountains, forests and vineyards. It is filled with "I could live here" villages, ancient castles and abbeys. We will spend the day joy riding along curving roads and exploring villages like Gordes and Roussillon, both listed as "one of the most beautiful villages of France". We will spend some serious “camera” and cafe time in the red ochre village of Roussillon. This village sits on the world's largest known ochre deposit. We will take a little hike through the Ochre Canyon. The richly colored paths leading through this canyon of bright red, orange and yellow cliffs are amazing. We will enjoy lunch together at one of the colorful cafes.
We will also make a stop to see the Roman built Julien Bridge, another testament to Roman engineering and the importance of this rural area 2000 years ago. It's the only surviving bridge on what was the main road from northern Italy to the Provinces, the primary route used by Roman armies. The 215-foot-long bridge was under construction from 27 B.C. to A. D.14. Amazingly, the bridge survives today, having outlived Roman marches, hundreds of floods, and decades of car traffic.
Back in St. Rémy, you will have the evening free. Perhaps you might spend it lounging poolside with a glass of the local rose'. (B) (L) Strenuous
Day 6 – Roman Provence in Arles – Friday, April 16, 2027
Today we will visit Arles, referred to as the "soul of Provence". This town filled with narrow streets, Romanesque churches and Roman ruins is impressive. Arles sealed its good fortune in the 1st century B. C. when it sided with Julius Caesar and became the designated "first city" of Provence. This led to the construction of temples, baths, an amphitheater, theatre and circus. Its location on the Rhone River made it the perfect place to build the first bridge on the Roman route to Spain. We will take time for a walking tour of town passing many of these Roman ruins.
We will also visit inside the Ancient History Museum with models of most of the important Roman structures in Arles. The Museum’s marble bust of Julius Caesar is one of the few sculpted during his lifetime. The most important treasure of the museum is the Roman boat discovered in the nearby Rhone River. After almost 2000 years it was raised and reassembled and is now the highlight of the museum.
The city of Arles has a connection to the famous artist Vincent Van Gogh, and you can see many of the scenes that eventually became “works of art”. You will see where Van Gogh lived and painted. You will even get to see the "bright yellow cafe", the subject of one of his most famous works in Arles, Café Terrace at Night.
On our way back to St. Rémy, we will stop for a visit to the Abbey de Montmajour. It was founded in the 10th century by Benedictine monks and is today a remarkable example of Romanesque architecture. The surrounding fields were a favorite of Van Gogh, who walked here from Arles to paint his famous wheat fields. Tonight we will enjoy a “French Style” Pizza dinner in St. Rémy.

Day 7 – The Good Life at Le Château d’Estoublon – Saturday, April 17, 2027
Enjoy your morning and soak up that healthy Provencal sun. We will make a short drive to the beautiful Château d'Estoublon for our lunch adventure. This country wine estate is the perfect example of what you would expect a French estate chateau to look like. There is even a chapel that has beautiful stained-glass windows. It is the kind of place that makes you want to just sit and relax for hours with a delicious glass of the estate’s wine.
On the way back to St. Rémy, we will visit the St. Paul Monastery and Hospital, another home to Van Gogh where Vincent spent the year between 1889 – 1890. This was after cutting off one of his ears during an argument with fellow artist, Gauguin. There is a reconstruction of his room where he painted some of his most famous works, including Irises and The Starry Night. It is a very surreal experience to walk past some of the exact spots where he created over 150 paintings during this period. Several are some of his most famous and are highly treasured throughout the world today. You will have this last evening free. (B) (L) Light
Day 8 - Les Baux-de-Provence & A Mediterranean Holiday – Sunday, April 18, 2027
This morning we say farewell to lovely St. Rémy. We will drive through the Alpilles mountains on our way to visit one of the most popular and most beautiful sites in Provence. The spectacularly situated Les Baux-de-Provence, is perched high above rocky outcrops that tumble into the deep valley of hell, the Val d' Enfer. It has a history dating back 5000 years, with the powerful lords of the region claiming a descent from Balthazar, one of the three kings who attended Christ's Nativity. They even used the star of Bethlehem as their coat of arms. Today the ancient castle ruins dominate the upper, old or dying town, but the lower medieval village filled with cute boutiques is a Provencal dream come true for shoppers. You will have time to enjoy every nook and cranny of this precious village which congers images of knights, and troubadours singing flowery verses to aristocratic ladies of the court. You can also visit the Castle Ruins (The "Dead City") and tour the chateau and ramparts. The views from this vantage point are amazing. You can see all the way to the city of Marseille and the Mediterranean.
Then we change gears a bit as we leave this slower paced region of Provence. We will hit the busy Autoroute for our drive to another famous area in France, the Côte d'Azur or the French Riviera. This is truly the home and playground of the rich and famous and has been for centuries. This area stretches along the blue coastline from St. Tropez to the Italian border near Menton. Hiding in a tiny cove along this route you will also find Monaco, one of the tiniest countries in the world. The vibrant Riviera city of Nice will be your home for the next three nights. We will settle into the Hotel Le Royal Promenade des Anglais situated right on the “Promenade Des Anglais” one of the most famous avenues of the French Riviera. There will be some time for a walking tour before we dine together in the lively Old Town Nice. (B) (D) Moderate
Day 9 - Fun on the French Riviera – Monday April 19, 2027
You will have today to enjoy Nice as you like. There is so much to see in this area, so you will have many choices. You can visit the wonderful art-filled museums in Nice dedicated to Matisse and Chagall. You might want to lounge along the beach and just enjoy “the good life”. Not far inland are wonderful villages like St. Paul de Vence and Vence. The famous film town of Cannes is a train ride away. If you want perfume, then a visit to Grasse is a must. There are many tour companies that offer day trips to all these locations. You could even take a city bike tour or cooking class. The hotel should have information on all of these adventures.
There is also great shopping at the Nice Etoile shopping mall and at Galleries Lafayette, France's premier department store. The Old Town has Cours Saleya with its flower and vegetable market. There are also some great candy shops in the old town. Everything is close together and there are several modes of public transportation that you can use to explore the city. There is a hop-on-hop-off bus that really makes it easy for sightseeing in town. (B)
Day 10 – Eze, Monaco & Monte Carlo, Oh My! – Monday April 20, 2027
Today will be a wonderful day of exploration along the Côte d’Azur. We will start with a visit to the medieval perched village of Eze and discover the perfume of the Fragonard. Then we are off to the Principality of Monaco, the second smallest country in the world. There is plenty to see in the “Disney-esque” setting where you can stroll through the old town, discover the Prince’s Palace and explore its neo-Romanesque cathedral where Prince Rainier married Grace Kelly in 1956. You will also see the famous Monte Carlo Casino Square, luxury boutiques and even get to drive along a portion of the Monaco Grand Prix circuit.
We will dine together one last time and toast our adventures in Southern France with a glass of local Rose'. It will surely have been another wonderful time of discovery made with new friends in the fabulous French regions of Provence and the Riviera. (B) (D) Moderate
