WINE TOURS AND TASTING
One of the joys of visiting Tuscany is the opportunity to taste some of the finest and tastiest wines in the world. Some are familiar like Chianti and Chianti Classico. Others like Vernaccia, Nobile de Montepulciano, Rosso de Montalcino, Brunello or the Super Tuscans may not be as well known in the USA unless you are a wine connoisseur. Several Tuscan wines are pretty pricey as well.
Wine has been produced in Tuscany since Etruscan times. The process has changed some with technology, but the pride and excitement of the winemaker is still the same. The role that nature plays in the creation of a really superb vino is also very important. Rainfall, temperature and characteristics of the soil make each wine unique to its area.
Most wines are made with the Sangiovese grape and its various hybrids. There are many to choose from but a few stand out and are usually a reliable indicator of quality. You will notice the official classification system - indicated by the letters "DOC" (Denominazione di Origine Controllat) or "DOCG" on some bottles. Some producers do not believe that this guarantees quality however, and do not apply for its classification and produce superlative wine under the "humblest" of labels, Vino da Tavola (Table Wine).
There is no shortage of rolling hills adorned with neatly tended vineyards in Tuscany. There are many wineries open to the public where wine can be tasted and purchased. Many of the wineries also have gift shops and sell marvelous olive oils and vinegars produced in addition to wine.
I have chosen winery stops that are both fun and informative. An observation of this important industry is central to understanding the soul and character of Tuscany. Even if you are not a wine connoisseur, it would be a pity not to make a winery stop in Tuscany. Most of our stops include a meal as well, since wine has traditionally been produced to enjoy with food. Learning how to pair the correct wine with the correct food can be very entertaining. Who knows, you might discover a Tuscan wine along the way that will become one of your favorites.
Below are some of types of wines we will have the opportunity to enjoy during our Tuscany Experience:
- Chianti - There are hundreds of Chiantis, good and bad. Some of the better versions are made by producers in the Gallo Nero (Black Rooster) consortium.
- Super Tuscan - This generic name for red wines is made by producers using new methods and new mixes of grape varieties. Prices are high.
- Montalcino - This village produces two main red wines: the expensive Brunello di Montalcino and its cheaper (but less aged) cousin, Rosso di Montalcino.
- Vino Nobile - This so-called "King of Wines" produced around Montepulciano is a fuller, stronger red than Chianti.
- Vernaccia - Made since at least the 13th century in San Gimignano and said to have been Michelangelo's favorite wine, is one of the few whites found in Tuscany. It is based on Trebbiano and Malvasia grapes.
- Vin Santo- The Vin Santo ("holy wine") is made all over Tuscany from Trebbiano and Malvasia grapes. It is a dessert wine and is usually sweet, but can also be dry.
